Democracy Diaries: Subscriber Jeff shares "The Insurrection is only the tip of the iceberg"
How to democracy against the coup in progress?
Subscriber Jeff shared The Insurrection is only the tip of the iceberg, an article by Sidney Blumenthal that outlines the detailed timeline for the coup, which spawned the insurrection as the coup was failing.
According to the article, the coup “was packaged for [Trump]. It was adapted, enhanced and intensified from longstanding Republican strategies for voter suppression. The coup was a variation on the theme from a well-worn playbook. Trump eagerly grasped for the plan handed to him.
“More than a year before the election of 2020, in August 2019, conservative operatives in closely connected rightwing organizations began preparing a strategy for disputing election results.”
The full article is worth several careful readings. The creators of the coup are well-organized and well-funded. They continue their efforts. They learned from the failures of November 2020-January 2021 and are systematically working to remove the roadblocks they encountered: Republican election officials with integrity who refused to lie, etc.
Our question remains: if there is a similarly well-organized, well-funded group on the left protecting democracy, I’m not aware of it. I’m not even sure it should be a left-wing group.
No one is coming to save us.
We are the ones we’ve been waiting for.
So: how do we democracy?
