Democracy Diary: Sedition, while librarians fight for democracy
While the big papers are asleep at their posts
I have two draft posts based on suggestions from readers in the works, but today the major news about democracy is in Heather Cox Richardson’s Letters from an American — even if you subscribe, it’s worth a second read while asking yourself the question - okay, what are we going to do? Because the Voting Rights Act is very unlikely to pass, and the Insurrecticans intend to destroy democracy. There’s a mention of one group who seems to be doing good work that I’ll follow up on and post more about later.
Only one aspect of this is reported on the front screen of today’s New York Times — a story about Kevin McCarthy refusing to be interviewed by the January 6 committee. This is, in my mind, hugely damning to the press in the US. Do they not read about what happens to the free press in places like Hong Kong when authoritarians take power? It’s absolutely baffling to me, the dereliction of duty by the press.
Librarians, on the other hand, are kicking ass in the fight for democracy.
BTW - it looks like the “daily-ish” I spoke about for this newsletter in my first post will be more “ish” than “daily.” I started during the Christmas lull. Now that things are heating up again at work, I simply don’t have enough time to post as often. But I’ll try to make them matter when I do.
