Democracy Diary: We have to stop being surprised
If Biden "didn't anticipate" the resistance he's seen from the Insurrecticans, the Dems are dangerously delusional
So what I’ve been thinking about today is that I came across an article that reports Biden saying in a recent press conference that he “‘did not anticipate that there would be such a stalwart effort to make sure that the most important thing was that President Biden didn’t get anything done.”
What now? Do the Dems not remember THE ENTIRE OBAMA PRESIDENCY? Merrick Garland?
If this is true — if the Democrats seriously did not anticipate that the Recouplicans would obstruct everything the administration tried to do — then they are — I don’t know how else to say this accurately — dangerously delusional.
This is important to me because evidence-based reality matters. The vast majority of Republicans are not living in an evidence-based reality. But if the Dems don’t clearly understand the lengths Republicans are willing to go for power, then they’re not living in an evidence-based reality either.
Note: We’re still considering doing an ideation event, probably on a weekend in March, on how to protect democracy in the face of the long coup. Let us know if you’re interested.
